Fire Ranger and Wood Tools to include hands on experience with a number different fire making techniques to include bow drills and fire pistons.

It will also cover some requirements from the Survival Skills elective badge

For youth, this should not be their first experience with these topics. We recommend they have basic skills in these areas. This clinic will go in depth on these skills. There will be educational skill components in a classroom setting and then very much hands-on field exercise portions to learn and demonstrate the skills to proficiency. You will build and start fires without matches. You will learn and demonstrate several different fire lays. You will use an axe/hatchet and saw to cut wood in usable pieces and make bushcraft tools. This clinic is for both Trailmen and adult leaders/fathers/guardians. There will be additional content provided beyond the requirements for the classes above. One goal for this clinic is that you will be able to throw away your matches and never have to use them again to start a fire!

This clinic will be held at a private farm and the fee includes the camping fee, coffee & hot water, filtered drinking water, use of the barn (classroom with power and a small refrigerator) and the ability to harvest wood for our class. The farm will provide some felled, staged and workable logs for us to saw and split during our class as well as fuel wood for us to burn. This will increase the amount of time we have to focus on learning. You will be responsible for your meals.

Youth who sign up must come with their father/male guardian or with members of their troop who are responsible for maintaining youth to leader ratios. Those who complete this class should become proficient enough to return to their troops and teach any of the fire and wood tools related skill classes. Access to Woodlands and Nav/Ads lesson plan slides will be provided after the class to any adult or Adventurer with a Gmail account.
